Psst, psst, Nikolaus may come to your house.

Put your shoes out on Dec. 5 before you go to bed.

In Germany, many children believe that Nikolaus (similar to Santa Claus) visits homes during the night of December 5th and leaves small treats in their shoes—things like candy, a fun pencil, or a tiny toy.

Since your children are learning about German culture, their Host Nation teachers shared this tradition with them. If you’d like to join in, simply have your child place a pair of shoes outside their bedroom door or, if neighbors are okay with it, outside your hallway door on the evening of December 5th.

This is completely optional, but it’s a fun way to experience a beloved German custom! And if Nikolaus doesn’t make it to your home, you might choose to add a little surprise for yourself.

Thank you for letting your child experience a German tradition.
