Ramstein Elementary Students Celebrate the Tradition of Volksmarching
On Oct. 4, Ramstein Elementary students laced up their boots and ventured into the woods for the school’s annual fall Volksmarch, honoring a beloved German tradition.
A Volksmarch, which translates to “people’s walk,” is a noncompetitive community walk that can be enjoyed by anyone—families, friends, pets, or even solo participants. Originating in Europe, the Volksmarch encourages exploration, exercise and camaraderie.
This year, students walked alongside classmates, teachers and parents, enjoying the fresh air and beautiful natural surroundings. The fall Volksmarch offers a unique way for students to connect with nature while also getting some exercise and learning about local traditions.
Ms. Beatrice Whitely, who coordinated this year’s event, emphasized its value for community engagement. “It’s a wonderful way for parents to be involved in a school activity, and it’s great for the students to experience something that’s both cultural and active,” she said.
In addition to students and their families, Dr. Wanda Bradley, Europe Central community superintendent, joined in the walk with Sure Start students, adding a special touch to the event.
The Volksmarch is a long-standing tradition at Ramstein Elementary, with two annual events—one in the fall and one in the spring—allowing the school community to celebrate twice a year. The school looks forward to continuing this tradition and is grateful for the ongoing support from families and staff.
